Amalfi

Amalfi is the historical soul of the coast, it was the first of the Marine Republics in Italy, a proud and fascinating place, which, with the passing of time has become one of the most famous tourist destinations in the whole of Europe. The ancient town centre is situated at the mouth of a narrow valley, with the houses built on the valley sides, overlooking the sea. Between the facades of the older buildings, such as the Monastery of Capuchin Monks (founded in 1212) gardens full of flowers spring up, releasing the perfume of lemon trees between the narrow streets and steps that lead to the main square which is dominated by the Majestic byzantine .cathedral The characteristic alleyways of Amalfi play host to a large number of tourists now, but in times gone by, these streets saw and lived the wealth of the powerful Republic, which between the 10th and 12th centuries sailed the seas with fleets of galleons, keeping back the Longobards and Saracens while trading with the East. Every year, in memory of its ancient power and importance, the noble traditions of the marine republics are celebrated with a regatta, which takes place in one of the four marine republics (Amalfi, Genoa, Pisa and Venice)in turn.
